Simon Pearce

Jeff and I flew solo this past weekend. We left the kids behind and headed to Vermont, my old stomping grounds, so we could attend my cousin Emily's wedding. The wedding was held in the Woodstock/Quechee area in central VT. More on the wedding later but for the hours leading up to the event we had some time to explore. Top on our list was to check out to Simon Pearce for lunch and to watch some glass being blown.

Here's the view from the outside the mill. This is where the retail, restaurant and glassblowing happens. It's situated on the Ottauquechee River which provides hydroelectric power for the glass furnaces and electricity for the entire facility.20100814-DSC_0113.jpg

Across the street there is a gallery that houses some unique art and furniture...

First things first...food.....there was a line out the door 30 minutes before opening to get first seating on the terrace overlooking the water. We didn't know what to do but like a lemming I jumped in line while Jeff browsed around. He thought I was crazy but I got us the last river-side view...AMAZING!

Terrible picture but that drink deserved a viewing...yes it was 11:30 am...

Then we shopped some...

and educated ourselves in the art of glassblowing...

This is what powers this place...

Simon does pottery too...

This guy was on that wall you see out the window in the above picture...he was even larger in person...

ahhhh...

20100814-DSC_0102.jpg

See that guy in mid-air? These kids were swinging from a rope attached to the bridge...they had to let go at just the right time or they would be dead meat. This was like 30 feet from the end of the water fall so I can imagine the current is pretty ridiculous down there.

This was outside the restaurant and is just so Vermont to me...bread and muffins as you walk in...

20100814-DSC_0108.jpg

This is what we purchased...Jeff said he wants to serve meat on it...gross right?

Then back to the Inn to get ready for the wedding...if you've never stayed at the Woodstock Inn...it's worth a look-see...absolutely beautifully quaint...kicking myself for not taking more pictures of it.

FROM GRAM: hi Kate

Thank you for sending your pictures of your pre-wedding visit to SP...great photos of the operation and of you and Jeff dining at the restaurant. What a gorgeous platter you purchased...a fresh smmer salad would look elegant on it!!!!

Kelly and family are here now...just showed Kelly pictures of the wedding and of Aston and Stellyn....Jeff is very interested in pictures of th eentire family...especially Aston and Stellyn. You and Jeff brought delightful weather to Vermont which has remained into this week.

Dinner tonight at the Windjammer with Kelly and family, Julie and family and us (minus Luke who is still at Camp Abnaki !!

Must go since the man delivering 2 cords of wood just arrived...Chuck will be very happy!! love to all, Gram

I'll never get over how we have this passion in common. Bruce and I have poured over this post...Bruce says, "I could spend some serious cash in this place" heehee.
Our wedding champagne glasses were SP too, think I forgot to tell you that. We have both mourned a minute about the dropped bowl again. LOVE the pic of the platter being held up. Love all the glass blowing ones and the one of the guy in motion in the back. Love the view/the drink in the morn. We would LOVE this place and frankly need to go there ASAP. I had no idea this all existed.
